Orthodontics
Orthodontics includes observation of the growth and development of the jaws, and the factors which affect the tooth position and studies the interaction between the external and internal influences on the development of teeth. It also includes the correction of the slow and irregular growth of teeth.
Preventive orthodontics includes the measures which are taken in order to preserve normal occlusion in a particular phase of growth. Currently, these measures are aimed at the prevention of harmful effects of external factors while the efficient orthodontic prevention of hereditary anomalies still cannot be undertaken.
Interceptive orthodontics deals with the early recognition and elimination of the irregularities of still developing dentofacial complex. This means that irregularities in the development phase do exist and therefore, appropriate measures should be taken for alleviation or removal of an existant anomaly or for the removal of its cause. An example procedure of interceptive orthodontics is a plan of a series of tooth extractions because of a striking disproportion of tooth and jaw size.
